Which ring did gandalf have

Why wouldn't they reveal this anywhere in the book? Wouldn't he be tempted to use it and possibly become like Soromon? Anyway I could be wrong. I am just confused. Mormegil Exceptionally Superfluous. Galadriel wasn't destroyed. When the One Ring was destroyed, the three Elven rings lost all their power. Galadriel, having passed the test of rufusing the One Ring, decided to go into the West. She left with Gandalf , Frodo , Bilbo , etc. As for the Elven rings being evil. They were not evil, and the bearers were not subject to Sauron 's will whilst he did not have the One.

The Elven Rings were not made by Sauron, so they were not inherently evil. It was safe to use them whilst Sauron didn't have the One. Well, ok then, was it just Lothlorien that was destroyed, because it was made useing the rings power? Lothlorien lost its magical protection brought about hy the Elven ring. Thanks everybody that answers my questions!

Viceras Daydark New Member. Hello, Just thought I'd try to help you understand about the three Elven Rings. Sauron , when making the rings of power , assisted the elves with making 15 rings of power With him being present.

After which he went to Mt. Doom and forged The One Ring , that he would use to enslave all who wore the other rings. Feanor learning the process of making the rings, made the three Elven rings without Sauron's presence, so that not all of his evil tainted them, though because their creation was from Saurons's knowledge and methods, they were still subject to the ruling ring.

Essentially, Galadriel recieved one of the rings, and then two went to Gil-Galad. Gil-Galad then passed them to Elrond and Cirdan. Cirdan, giving his to Gandalf. Frodo, not being well versed in ring lore, was unaware of the numerous Elven rings' significance. Lots of people wear rings and jewellery. That means Aragorn too was aware of Galadriel's ring, and probably Gandalf's as well due to their close and longstanding friendship.

To his credit, he could keep his mouth shut. Sauron forged the Ring around the year SA Soon afterwards, Sauron attempted to use it to subjugate the wielders of the three Elvin rings crafted by Celebrimbor. When Sauron placed the One Ring on his finger, the Elves were immediately aware of him so removed their rings.

Sauron marshalled his armies to seize all the Rings of Power by force. The War began in SA Although Sauron's body was destroyed, his spirit remained in a greatly weakened state and unable to take physical form.

Bilbo finds the Ring while spelunking under the mountain. The Ring stays in the family for 77 years until it gets melted where it was made. In short; After the Ring was cut from Sauron's hand he never touched it again. For three thousand years the One Ring was not available to him and the three uncorrupted Elven rings were safely worn and used for the good of Middle Earth.

On the one hand - no. On the other hand - possibly. Refer to the Lorien chapters in LotR where Galadriel wore the ring on one mentioned occasion. Frodo could see it but yet Sam could not. What are we to make of this? After all, the "openly wore" quote specifically refers to Frodo being able to see that Gandalf openly wore it. Should we read that as meaning that Gandalf had worn it all along, just not "openly" in the same manner as Galadriel's ring was not "openly worn"?

Does this mean that Frodo was aware that Gandalf was always wearing it but never said anything, nor did Tolkien mention it both of which seem unlikely? Unfortunately, in the absence of anything from Tolkien himself confirming it and one gets the feeling that Tolkien would snort and declare the answer obvious we're left with personal interpretation of those words. Should it not work both ways? If when Sauron put on the One Ring, and the other ring bearers became instantly aware of him, would then not Sauron instantly be aware of them too and know exactly who they were?

It doesn't make sense that only the Elven ring bearers were aware of Sauron when he put the One Ring on, while he was not aware of them. I think this is a problem in the text that is not fully explained by Tolkien.

I think it has to work both ways, in which case when Sauron put his One Ring on he was instantly aware of who had the Elven rings, if they were wearing them at that instant. As the guardian of that location, Cirdan got to meet all the Istari as they arrived in Middle-earth, and he gave his ring to Gandalf for three reasons. One, he liked Gandalf better than any of the other Istari.

He lived about as far away from Sauron as you can possibly get without leaving Middle-earth, and he wanted the ring to be on the hand of somebody who was actually going to need it. Tolkien never really elucidated the specific powers of wizards. But it seems that there are some things all wizards can all do. They all use staffs to focus their magic, for example.

Gandalf and Radagast can both speak to animals; Gandalf and Saruman both have some level of ability to mystify using only their voice. But it also seems like wizards have specialties.

Tolkien says that the Valar deliberately did not mandate that the Istari work together, and in part chose them for their different and separate powers and inclinations.

Which might seem odd for a guy whose biggest magic moments in the movies involve summoning great white beams of light or fighting another wizard with invisible waves of force. To Tolkien, Gandalf embodied the fire of creation in the forge, the fire of warmth in the hearth, and the torch fire that keeps the darkness at bay.

When Gandalf died, his divine being left his set physical form, and about 20 days later, he was returned to life. Naked I was sent back — for a brief time, until my task is done.

And, of course, he was sent back changed. The moment he does his big villain reveal to Gandalf, he also reveals a change of wardrobe. Nine went to kings of men, seven to the dwarves, and three to the elves, with Sauron himself crafting the One Ring to control the others. Only the three elven rings remain in-play when Lord of the Rings begins. Neither the original Lord of the Rings books by J. Tolkien, nor the movie adaptations by Peter Jackson dwell on this trio of rings.

But while none play a significant part in the trilogy, all three are very much present. One sits on the finger of Elrond Vilya , one is wielded by Galadriel Nenya , and the final ring, Narya, is used by none other than Gandalf.
